I could feel the eyes of the everyone in the room on me, but I only cared about one person—Li. I looked directly at him and answered his question. “Yes, I recognize him. He was at Ms. Wang’s house. He was the lead officer.”

Li took another drag of his cigar and blew the smoke out in an eerily slow manner. I wasn’t sure if it was an intimidation tactic or if he was just deep in thought. “So you met Mr. Tan? He told me he knew you were hiding in the closet the whole time.”

“I had no idea. I assumed he was an actual officer of the law.”

“Mr. Tan is an actual officer, but he’s on my payroll. Like many of the officers in Bangkok,” Li shot back.

I just nodded politely, hoping we could move away from the current topic, but that wasn’t happening.

“So, I was told you shot Ms. Wang in her home. Is that correct?” He leaned forward.

“That’s right. I shot her six times and dumped her body in the Chao Phraya River.”

“What room were you in when you shot her?” Li kept his gaze fixed on me.

“I was in the living room. The main room when you walk in. There’s a fireplace in the corner.” I knew I was digging my own grave. The more you said while lying, the greater risk of being exposed. I was saying too much.

He stood up with the stub of his cigar in his right hand. “Where on her body did you shoot Ms. Wang?”

“The best I can recall, I got her in the stomach and shoulder.” I could see Li’s jaw clenching, and he was toking harder on the cigar. “I’m sorry, and I mean no disrespect by this, but is there a reason why I’m being interrogated?”

Li ignored my question and continued. “So, I’m assuming you cleaned up the blood, right?”

He was playing a masterful game of chess, and he had me in check. I gave serious consideration to pulling out my pistol there and then, but there was no way I’d get the shots off in enough time to escape, so I continued to play. “Yes, it probably took me an hour or so to do it. I sure hope I got it all.”

Bianchi was sitting to my left, and I could feel his leg shaking uncontrollably. The rest of the room was pin-drop silent until Li went on. “Well, the officer who works for me is assigned to the investigation. He left the house early this morning. Apparently you did an incredible job of cleaning up in that hour, because they didn’t see any blood. In fact, even after they sprayed Luminol, not a trace was left behind. I find that hard to believe.” He started walking down the right side of the long table and stopped a foot away from me. “In fact, I find it impossible to believe!”

Li grabbed my head and drove the lit end of the cigar into my neck while the soldiers jumped up and pointed their rifles at the three of us.
